History

People have been living in the land that is Tennessee for thousands of years. Before the Europeans arrived in Tennessee, the land was settled by the Cherokee and Chickasaw Native American tribes. The first European to arrive in Tennessee was Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto in 1541. He claimed the land for Spain, but it would be over 100 years later until Europeans began to settle the area. In 1714, Charles Charleville built a small fort in Tennessee called Fort Lick. He traded furs with the local Indian tribes for many years. This area would eventually become the city of Nashville. After the French and Indian War in 1763 between France and Britain, Britain took control of the land. They made it part of the colony of North Carolina. At the same time, they made a law that said colonists could not settle west of the Appalachian Mountains.Despite the British law, colonists began to settle in Tennessee. It was a land rich with furs and open land. People moved into the Tennessee frontier and the land became more and more settled over the next several years. After the Revolutionary War, Tennessee became part of the United States. Eastern Tennessee became the State of Franklin in 1784, but this only lasted until 1788. In 1789, Tennessee became a U.S. Territory and on June 1, 1796 Congress made Tennessee the 16th state of the United States.

Present Day

Tennessee is located in the upper south of Eastern US. The state is known for its unique rectangular geography stretching from Appalachian Mountain boundary with North Carolina in the east to Missouri and Arkansas in the West.Tennessee has a moderate climate featuring cool winters and warm summers. Because of the state’s diverse elevations and its central position in the eastern half of the country, many plants, animals, and fish are found in Tennessee. Roughly one-half of Tennessee is forested, and there are more than 200 species of trees, a variety of which are commercially valuable. Trees such as locust, poplar, maple, oak, elm, beech, pine, spruce, walnut, hickory, and sycamore are found throughout the state.A network of interstate highways and urban beltways facilitates travel between and around major cities. The state has dozens of public domestic airports. International air service is available from Nashville and Memphis as these two cities serve as important regional transportation hubs. The cultural life of Tennessee is divided on the basis of the regions – in East Tennessee the white Europeans have helped shape the music, crafts and art, while African Americans have been the formative cultural force in the West. Middle Tennesseans have nurtured a rich amalgam of religious, educational, and other institutions.

Future

For instance, in the past 25 years, Tennessee has seen a population increase of 1.6 million people. By the year 2040, approximately 2 million more people will call Tennessee home. The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation has prepared a five-year State Recreation Plan since 1965. The most current state outdoor recreation plan, Tennessee 2020, was developed through an in-depth public process, reviewed and approved by the National Park Service, and then presented to Gov. Phil Bredesen and the citizens of Tennessee on March 31, 2010.Tennessee 2020 is a comprehensive planning document focused on the future of Tennessee’s parks, people and landscapes. This plan represents an ambitious undertaking, expanding the scope of previous recreation plans by extending the vision 10 years into the future. Tennessee 2020 documents the most critical needs facing conservation and recreational infrastructure over the next 10 years. Building upon input received through surveys, public meetings, working groups and more, the plan outlines goals for everything from increasing public information about recreational opportunities to improving Tennesseans’ health and the state’s economic climate through sustainable practices. Tennessee 2020 will serve as a catalyst for the state to work with communities and other stakeholders to maintain the recreational assets , prioritize specific needs for the future and take action to meet those needs.
