History

While we look at the history of Lisbon it can be seen that the city has enjoyed such an importance for trade acting as a port. This is because of the natural or the geographical alignment of the city at the mouth of the Tagus river and due to the fact that it is close to southern and western Europe. The Celtics were the indigenous people of this city and later Germans, Arabs, and Christian Crusaders also were related to Lisbon or this part of Portugal. Initially the Arabs took over the previously Christian Iberian Peninsula. Then the Christian Crusaders took over the land again. That was the time when Lisbon was made capital of Portugal. The economic wealth of Lisbon increased during the 15th century because of their colonies in Africa Asia, South America. In 1755 a massive earthquake hit Lisbon and the city had to be rebuilt again. Political awakening was brought to Lisbon only in the 20th century. 45 governments have changed from 1910 to 1926. Then till 1975 there was dictatorship. Then because of the success of Carnation Revolution democracy was again reinstated in Portugal. The economy got more strengthened as Portugal joined the European Community therefore received lot of financial assistance and funds.

Accommodating a population of about 508,368 with an area of about 100.05 square kilometres, Lisbon is the capital of Portugal and also Portugal’s largest city. 27 percent of its population resides in the metropolitan region of Lisbon. Municipal is the governing body headed by the Mayor. Lisbon has been recognised as a global city in Portugal due to its economic importance. Lisbon has the largest container port on Atlantic coast. With a per capita income of $32,434, Lisbon occupies the 40th place in highest gross earnings worldwide. The head of the state resides here which shows the political influence and importance this city has. Lisbon is home for certain famous museums and also has a renowned opera house. Theatres and musical houses are also a part of Lisbon's rich heritage. In the memory of Saint Anthony , 13th of June is given holiday. Several festivals like the Lisbon film festival,, Lisbon book fair happens every year showing the rich culture of Lisbon. Education in Lisbon is also up to its standard. 125,867 students were enrolled in the year 2007-08. Public schools, Universities, colleges contribute to educational excellence of Lisbon.

Future

Certain improvement strategies for development of the city known as Lisbon strategy was adapted in 2000. Because of the big economic crisis that happened in 2010 , the growth of Portugal has significantly reduced. Also the country is struggling with the Cohesion Policies but Lisbon doesn’t face this issues as it is contributing to the economy in a healthy way. Portugal has taken a 7 year budget proposed for the period between 2021- 2027 in order to make a working and a more realistic plan. Moreover Lisbon is on its path of becoming a tech hub as it has become a centre of attraction for digital media personals. Lisbon administration is also aiming to expand metro rail network. Also Lisbon has been recognised as one among the 21 future cities list which is based on people’s votes. Moreover Lisbon council has launched a very highly sophisticated research centre called the Future of Work Laboratory. This is due to certain peeks of the city like infrastructure and also because of the common usage of English in the city. Belem Tower

The tower is officially known as Tower of Saint Vincent. Built during the period of Portuguese Renaissance, the tower dates back to 1519. Belem Tower has obtained the recognition of UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is located in a the Tagus river.

Sao Jorge Castle

Such a magnificent structure with a history which goes till 8 BC. It also has been used as a sign of fortification during the invasion age of Lisbon. The administration and maintenance of the castle is looked after by the Government of Portugal. The castle is open to public view.

Jeronimos Monastery

Located near the Tagus river, the monastery has been secularised and then taken by charitable institution. The Manueline style architecture of monastery is so intriguing. The monastery was built in the place of church which was earlier built here.

Oceanarium

The Lisbon Oceanarium is the largest indoor aquarium in the entire Europe. Housing over 450 species and 16000 animals, this aquarium receives visitors of about 1 million every year. A place not to miss.

Tagus River

The longest river in entire Iberian Peninsula, the river empties in the Atlantic Ocean. The length of the river is about 1007 kilometres. The river plays an important role in the culture of the Portuguese. The river also guarded the entry to Lisbon during the historic period.
