History

Formerly known as the Peking, Beijing is the city which changed various names since its foundation. The city has history of about 3000 years and its existence as a capital is about 700 years symbolizes that the city can be counted as one of the oldest cities of the world. Since its foundations, Beijing was the capital of the almost 6 prehistoric empires which includes some one of the wealthiest kingdoms of that time i.e. Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties. According to the Chinese legends, the positioning of the city was considered to be strategic from northeast corner it was surrounded by the mountains peaks which was separated by the empire from the Manchu and Mongol territories to the north and well connected to the rich Yangtze basin by the Grand Canal. In the wake of 12th century, one of the ancient rulers of the China of that time Yuan dynasty founded and built a city from the northeast part of the world. The ruler named the city ‘Dadu’ and it graced it as the administrative city of the China. Afterwards, the city was under the control of Ming dynasty, they named the Nanjing as the capital and also renamed the old Mongol capital to Beiping. Under the reign of the Ming dynasty only the restored the city and gave it a new name “Beijing”. During 18th century, the city was under the control of the Qing dynasty who initiated Taiping Civil War in China viz. considered longest and bloodiest war in human history. However, the Qing’s won the war. In 1894, 1st Sino-Japanese war was ignited by the brutal empire of Japan and they defeated the Qing dynasty. The Great Japan ruled the till 19th century and hosted the city as the capital of the “Republic of China”. In 1937, it reignited the fire and it came as a result of the Chinese victory over the Mainland China and it was around 1949 the officially and confirmed capital of the “People’s Republic of China”.
