About

Harry Winston “ the king of diamonds” across a street Harry Winston could identify a Kimberly. An infamous story about Harry Winston is that he could recognize through a window if the stone is of value. He gave us the phenomenal “a diamond is forever' if a diamond had a face it had to be synonymous with Harry Winston. For him, the art of jewelry was to make discreet and petite ornaments that connected the chord of the heart. Harry created an exclusive peek of luxury and emotion with his diamonds. He made the world believe his diamonds are art it takes a true master to create the fluidity of this art called “diamond making”. The legacy of Winston will never seize, a true diamond king with an eye for the glitz and extravagance. He will be remembered for the generations to come.

Early Life

Harry Winston versioned of bringing back the uniqueness of the jewels, the range of diamonds was inspired by the neoclassicism spirit, his diamonds were rare because of a distinct style and detailing that was followed which was interlinking the most exquisite pieces altogether. Neo-classics considered themselves to be blue blood and maintained supremacy. Artisans and jewelers had to create something that was best suited for aura and temperament keeping in mind what the women needed was “classic opulent, predominant royalty which could last” Winston endorsed the ideas of the neo- age hence coined the term "A DIAMOND IS FOREVER". In 1943, when Harry Winston rented and became the first man to rent diamonds to Jennifer Jones his most possessed trademark his signature diamond to Jennifer Jones and thereafter becoming popular among Hollywood stars. He proudly treasured his ancient technique to decorative details and there was his beginning.

Road to Success

Ambaji Shinde was the genius behind the legacy of Harry Winston, originally from Mumbai after losing his father Ambaji was the sole bread owner, desperate to work he applied to work for a textile, who was spotted by Winston during his reign and traveling in 1950. Ambaji Shinde went on to create a constellation of masterpieces for Winston. An important treasure as Winston would say “Shinde created pieces that were absolute and pure genius”. Ambaji had many feathers to his hat. He taught the art of jewelry designing, it was his talent of designing that turned him the most difficult and trusted. he accentuated the art into the masterpiece he drew inspiration from the little most insignificant and turned it into royal, most innovative masterpieces. Ambaji possesses his style, he mapped the Indian jewelry making overseas by becoming one of the trusted companions of Winston. Ambaji designed for maharajas in India but due to colonization and westernization the taste of royalty was changing steadfast it was Ambaji who then designed the most graceful and luxuriant pieces Harry Winston believed in reaching the right market, Winston wanted to create a luxury brand, where emotions were put into the table by following the strategy of giving the company a tweaking that was both doable and profitable. Soon Winston was being associated with big stars, charitable progressions were made on his name, his name soon had a face value where auctions were made and estates were created in his name, most of the exquisite pieces were for celebrities who would endorse Winston’s name this was a marketing strategy which was followed to make a product that sells emotions and gems.

Challenges

The marketing team focused on airbrushing the idea behind diamonds. A product is a failure if it does not strike a chord within the realm of the targeted customer. With dwindling response over time, it is absolutely necessary for a product to be marketed exuberantly, to make up for lost sales, and to reach the upper limit of the then decided mark. For Winston, he had created the right barrier for his product by producing the line of diamonds that is “ rare and would fit the lifestyle of the elite and entitled” Harry Winston was not revolutionary in his approach but rather he made some very evolving revelation. He created six brands and the sales just skyrocketed to a whopping fifty percent between 1994-1997. He changed the entire trajectory of luxury, soon after he became the “Diamond King”. He launched perfumes, bags, leather bags, invested in leather retailing.

Failures

His two sons were on the legal tussle over his wealth since the death of his father to the succession of the firm Ronald Winston and Bruce Winston gained a lot of negative attention and subsequently bought some to the firm too. they could not carry forward the aggressive legacy of his father, the funds were cut short and profits were minimized they could not produce and fail at maximizing profit they failed to implement the positive sparks unlike his father however it is presently estimated In 2000, Ronald along with new business partner bought Bruce out from the company for $54.1 million. And presently it is estimated to be 1.7 billion which was brought by the Canadian jeweler in 2016. The family barrier bought down the image that Harry Winston had spent a life building. A legacy that'll never be forgotten.
