He has one older brother, Hugo and two older sisters, Elma and Liliana Catia who is a singer. Ronaldo grew up in a largely working-class neighbourhood in a small tin-roofed home. Ronaldo was introduced to the soccer game through his dad. As a child, he played for amateur team Andorinha from 1992 to 1993 where his father works as a kit man and later two years he spent with Nacional. In 1997, he went for a three day trial with Sporting CP, where he signed for a fee of 1,500 euro. At the age of fourteen, he believed he can play soccer as a semi-professional and he told his mother to cease his education so that he can focus entirely on football. In school, he was quite famous among the students once his math teacher told him that there will be no future for him in football. He had been expelled after throwing a chair at his teacher, who he said had disrespected him. Ronaldo was diagnosed with a heart condition at the age of 15 where he underwent surgery and made a full recovery. Soon Cristiano Ronaldo left his unfriendly home. In 2001, 16 years, he signs with Manchester United and paid him 12 million euro. He was the highest-paid player at that age. Challenges

In 2005 when he was playing for Manchester United, his father died from a kidney problem. For him, the death of his dad was especially hard as he was close to his dad. “It was a very difficult moment. It’s not normal to lose your father at 20 years of age and you learn a great many things about yourself at such times,” said Ronaldo. He said, “Family is the most important support I have. I think if you don’t have a good relationship with your family then everything becomes more difficult. My father was No 1 in my life. He is always in my heart. I have a picture of him in my house, which I put up in a high position so I know he is always watching over me. I remember all the good things about him. He helped me a lot. I give grace to God for giving me a great family – my mother, my sisters, my brother, my cousins, even my brother-in-law. They have all been very important people in my life. It’s so important for a player to have his head in the right place. If you don’t have your head in the right place it becomes difficult.” Later, in 2017 his mother struggled with breast cancer.
