Beginning

In the month of July in the year 1886, pharmacist John Stith Pemberton from Columbus, Georgia invented the original Coca-Cola drink, which was advertised as helpful in the relief of headache and to be placed primarily on sale in drugstores as a medicinal beverage. Pemberton continued his mixing experiments and during the month of May he reached his goal of creating a new product, an unnamed carbonated drink. Frank M. Robinson, is credited with naming the product and creating its logo, who was also the bookkeeper of Pemberton. Robinson chose the name Coca-Cola because of its two main ingredients (coca leaves and kola nuts) and because it sounded like an alliteration, by then Robinson was given the charge of promoting the project within a limited budget and he succeeded. In the year 1889, American businessman Asa G. Candler completed his purchase of the Coca-Cola formula and brand from Pemberton’s heirs. In the year 1892, the Coca-Cola Company was formally founded in Atlanta by Candler. By the year 1895, Coca-Cola was being sold in every state in the union. In the year 1919, the company was sold to Ernest Woodruff’s Trust Company of Georgia. Coca-Cola’s first ad read "Coca Cola. Delicious! Refreshing! Exhilarating! Invigorating!" Candler was one of the first businessmen to use merchandising in his advertising strategy.

Road to Success

Coca-cola’s earliest leaders believed that their product should be affordable and available everywhere. To achieve this, the company held the price of coke to Five cents – or one nickel – for almost 70 years. Despite the impact of two world wars and the Great Depression, the company insisted that the trial and acceptance of its product could best be maximized by making Coca-cola a beverage affordable to everyone. Despite being a great-tasting product, Coca-Cola’s existence was unknown to many consumers outside the South-eastern United States. To address this Asa G. Candler, who purchased the recipe for Coca-Cola from inventor John Pemberton in 1888, started giving away free sample coupons to anyone who would try a sip of a Coke. From 1894 through 1913, more than 8.5 million sample coupons were redeemed for a free Coca-Cola. Almost immediately after its launch, Coca-Cola faced an enormous number of “lookalikes” attempting to imitate its success. To confront this, Coca-Cola challenged glass companies to create a new bottle design that was so distinct that it could be recognised when broken on the ground or by touch in the dark. In 1915, inspired by the shape of the cocoa pod, the Root Glass Company created what is now known as the contour bottle to distinguish Coke from its peers. Now more than 100 years old, the contour bottle has become a celebrated and instantly recognizable icon around the world.

Challenges

The beverage and the drink is said to contain the coca plant and cola nuts which help as a cure of headache, but with the sugar in it and the huge consumption of the product it plays s huge role in causing obesity. The Company is experiencing the problem of uniformity in its bottles with hundreds of bottlers selling the Coca-Cola around the world. Hence this leads to uniformity on how the products look like. This is because there are different designs of bottles. with the rise of PepsiCo, the company started experiencing a lot of challenges and competition in the market and its shares started dropping. Pepsi is a well-established name and competing with it has proved to be troublesome. Before the arrival of the 20th century, cocaine was touted as the world’s newest wonder drug, a cure for almost everything. One of its biggest supporters was Sigmund Freud who wrote an article entitled Über Coca, “a song of praise to this magical substance.”

Failures

As of the year 1948, Coca-Cola had claimed about 60% of its market share. By the year 1984, The Coca-Cola Company\’s market share decreased to 21.8% due to new competitors, namely Pepsi. The biggest and closest competitor of Coca Cola; its arch rival PepsiCo was formed after the merger of Pepsi and Frito lay in 1965. The brand has seen growth in organic revenue in 2017. It has 20 billion dollar brands in its product portfolio. Coca cola also has some other rivals other than PepsiCo, such as Redbull, Dr Pepper Snapple, Nestle and parley. Coca-Cola has been accused of dehydrating communities in its pursuit of water resources to feed its own plants, drying up farmers’ wells and destroying local agriculture.
