About

Rajiv Hari Om Bhatia (born 9 September 1967),[5] known professionally as Akshay Kumar , is an India-born naturalised Canadian actor, producer, martial artist and television personality who works in Bollywood, the commercial Hindi language film industry based chiefly in Mumbai, India. Over 29 years, Kumar has appeared in over 100 films and has won several awards, including a National Film Award and two Filmfare Awards. Kumar is one of the most successful prolific actors of Hindi cinema.[6][7] Having starred in 113 films, 52 of which were commercially successful, he was the first Bollywood actor whose films' domestic net lifetime collections crossed ₹20 billion (US$280 million) by 2013, and ₹30 billion (US$420 million) by 2016.

Early Life

Kumar was born in Amritsar, Punjab, India, to Hari Om Bhatia and Aruna Bhatia in a Punjabi family. His father was an army officer. From a young age, Kumar was very interested in sports. His father too enjoyed wrestling. He lived and grew up in Delhi's Chandni Chowk and later he moved to Bombay (present-day Mumbai) when his father left Army to become an accountant with UNICEF. Soon, his sister was born and the family lived in Koliwada, a Punjabi dominated area of Central Bombay. He received his school education from Don Bosco High School, Matunga, simultaneously learning Karate. He enrolled in Guru Nanak Khalsa College for higher education, but dropped out as he was not much interested in studies. He requested his father that he wanted to learn martial arts further, and his father somehow saved money to send him to Thailand. Kumar went to Bangkok to learn martial arts and lived in Thailand for five years learning Thai Boxing. Kumar also has a sister, Alka Bhatia. When Kumar was a teenager, his father asked him what he aspired to be. Kumar expressed his desire to become an actor. After having obtained a black belt in Taekwondo while in India, he studied martial arts in Bangkok, Thailand, where he learned Muay Thai and worked as a chef and waiter. After Thailand, Kumar went to work in Calcutta (present-day Kolkata) in a travel agency, in Dhaka in a hotel and Delhi where he sold Kundan jewellery. Upon his return to Bombay, he commenced the teaching of martial arts. During this time, the father of one of his students, himself a model co-ordinator, recommended Kumar into modelling which ultimately led to a modelling assignment for a furniture showroom. Kumar effectively made more money within the first two days of shooting than in his entire month's salary, and therefore chose a modelling career path. He worked as an assistant for photographer Jayesh Sheth for 18 months without payment to shoot his first portfolio. He also worked as a background dancer in various films. One morning, he missed his flight for an ad-shoot in Bangalore. Disappointed with himself, he visited a film studio along with his portfolio. That evening, Kumar was signed for a lead role by producer Pramod Chakravarthy for the movie Deedar.

Road to Success

Akshay Kumar struggle life is itself inspiring. Born to Hari Om Bhatia and Aruna Bhatia in Amritsar, Akshay Kumar was named Rajiv Om Bhatia as a child. Quite a dancer, he never actually dreamt of being in the arc-light of Bollywood in young age. He took education from Don Bosco School and then joined Guru Nanak Khalsa College which after one year, he took a withdrawal from. Akshay Kumar success story does not only include acting but it also includes his love towards martial art. He was very passionate about Martial Arts and dropped his studies to pursue his passion in Bangkok with very little financial support from the family. It was a gamble for sure, as he had very little of financial backing up from not-so influential family. He did a number of odd jobs to upkeep his training. Started with being a waiter and then later promoted to the chef, it was very challenging to keep himself going with people surrounded speaking a language alien to him. He then came back to India and obtained black-belt in Taekwondo. But still, Akshay Kumar’s Success Story hasn’t started fruiting. Juggling between many odd jobs and passing through rigmarole, it was quite late before he found anything substantial career to continue with. Juggling between many odd jobs and passing through rigmarole, it was quite late before he found anything substantial career to continue with. Few know that he worked for 18 months straight without payment for Photographer Jayesh Sheth to get his portfolio shot! This is what Akshay Kumar success story is all about. With the first two days of shooting and modelling, he made much more money than his entire month’s salary and thus, chose to be a model for a career. Luckily, one day he missed his flight for an ad commercial shoot which turns out to be rewarding for him. He went to various studios with his portfolio and was finally selected for Pramod Chakravarthy’s lead for the movie Deedar.

Challenges

Akshay Kumar is undoubtedly one of the busiest actors we have in Bollywood. With his last film doing wonders at the box-office and some very interesting upcoming projects up his sleeve, he is certainly riding high in his career. However, it is not always that his career has been this great. The actor has had his share of flops and lows. He recently opened up about the time when he thought his career was over at a recent event. Speaking about his low phase, he reportedly said that there was a time when he had 14 flops and he believed that his career was over. Elaborating further, he added that he was dejected, but it was his training as a martial artist that came in handy for the actor. It taught him discipline. According to the actor, it was his learning from the 14 flops that helps me deliver hits even today. Meanwhile, on the work front, Akshay has some very interesting projects lined up which includes, ‘Housefull 4’, ‘Good Newwz’, ‘Bachchan Pandey’, ‘Laxmmi Bomb’ and ‘Sooryavanshi’.

Failures

Superstar Akshay Kumar has given a number of hit films in his long and illustrious career, but the star looks lost in the recent past. Akshay aka Khiladi Kumar who is known for his action and daring stunts has disappointed his fans from quite sometime. Akshay made his Bollywood debut with the film Saugandh in the year 1991, but tasted success in his second film Khiladi, released a year later. The action actor didn't had a brilliant start at the early stage of his career as few films didn't do well at the box office. Over the years the actor has developed a his reputation as most bankable stars in the B-town but disappointed the audiences with the flops like Yeh Dillagi, Jai Kishan, Amaanat, Zakhmi Dil and Ikke Pe Ekka after tasting initial success. Akshay was going through a low time in his career when he was offered the supporting role under Yash Raj Films' Dil Toh Pagal Hai, starring Shahrukh Khan. Film was one the biggest hits of the year 1997 and Akshay received the nomination for the Best Supporting Actor's role. But doing a cameo in DTPH didn't help Akshay as he failed to impress the audience with his comic timing in the film Mr. & Mrs. Khiladi. Bad luck continued for a long time as the actor had no releases for nearly two years post Mr. & Mrs. Khiladi's flop show. Now, it was rumoured that the actor's career has come to an end. But, the trained martial arts fighter was in no mood to give up. Akshay then decided to present himself in a new avatar by tickling the audiences' funny bone through comedy. He was appreciated for his comedy in films like Hera Pheri, Garam Masala, Mujhse Shadi Karogi and many more. But once again after making a successful come back on the big screen, Akshay made a mistake while signing films. His much talked about film Chandni Chowk To China failed badly at the box office in the year 2009.
